About Malay Cultural Group Malay Cultural Group (MCG) was formed under the management of Kelab Seni (Arts Club), a group of young arts’ enthusiast from Nanyang Polytechnic in 1992. During those days, MCG performed in various vibrant performances either in school or special events organized by external organizations. Since then, MCG has grown in numbers and the club grew into various sub- groups. MCG’s aim is to strengthen the Malay traditional culture so as it will not be forgotten by the new generations. Today, Malay Cultural Group is diversified into 3 subgroups. They are the Malay dance, the Dikir Barat and the Malay Theater group. These 3 subgroups give the opportunity for students who have strong passion in the Malay arts and culture to unlock the secrets of our tradition and discover their talents. Pusaka Seni Pusaka Seni is the name of MCG theatre drama. Pusaka seni has its hidden name in which Pusaka means heritage and Seni means arts or skills. Pusaka seni theatre drama encourages students to make personal choices through movement, dialogue and expression. These students will not only be introduced to the essential acting skills but also be guided to express their creativity and build confidence. For the past few years, Pusaka Seni has builds its name among other schools and other organizations by participating in numerous events. Some of the events we have participated are: - MCG Stage Production (Layar Andayu 2006,07,08,09) - MCG Hari Raya Production 2006 (Raya Dot Dot Dot) & 2007 (Konsert ERAya Antarabangsa) - 2nd place in Malay Poetry & Arts Competition (Gema Puisi Artistik 2007) - Sayembara Teater 2008 Betara Karisma Betara Karisma, NYP’s very own dikir barat team from the Malay Cultural Group is established in the year 2006. A year before, they are known as Sufi, an amateur group still trying to find their own identity in the arts arena. They soon change their name from Sufi to Betara Karisma for a new fresh start. Betara Karisma had lived up to its name. With a hidden meaning of the king from heaven who is very influential, they find their way slowly to the top. For the past 2 years, they had actively participated in major school events, local competitions as well as attending invitations from the public. They are always invited to grace major school events like Club Crawl, Open House and they are always the highlights of Malay Cultural Group’s very own local production. Besides excelling in dikir barat, our dikir barat boys are also talented in playing Kompang. Kompang is a malay tradisional musical instrument. The instrument is a single headed hand beaten drum with a shallow round frame. Different from Dikir Barat, playing of kompang is just another component in the Malay arts and culture. It is played in groups and usually performed for event such as wedding ceremonies and to welcome the arrival of VIPs.
